Tattoo Aftercare Guide

How to heal your ink the right way

Your tattoo is a fresh wound. How you treat it will shape how it heals. This guide walks you through exactly how to care for your new tattoo from day one to full healing. Whether it’s your first or your fiftieth, proper aftercare keeps your ink clean, crisp and bold.

How do I clean my tattoo?

Wash it daily with a mild, fragrance free soap. Use lukewarm water and gently pat the tattoo dry with a paper towel or clean cloth. Avoid scrubbing or rubbing.

Quick tips:

Wash once a day.

• No scented soaps or scrubs.

• No exfoliation.

• Dry by dabbing, never wiping.

Should I moisturize my tattoo?

Yes, apply a super thin layer of aftercare cream once or twice per day. Use only what your tattoo artist recommends. Too much cream results in clogged pores and longer healing.

What to avoid:

• Vaseline (too occlusive)

• Coconut oil (can trap bacteria)

• Thick layers (less is more)

What should I avoid during healing?

Keep your tattoo away from water, friction and sunlight. This means no swimming, no saunas and no rubbing from clothing.

Do NOT:

• Go to the gym for at least 3 days.

• Pick, scratch or peel the tattoo.

• Wear tight clothes over the area.

• Use tanning beds or sunbathe.

• Sleep directly on the tattoo.

Can I go in the sun with a healing tattoo?

No, fresh tattoos must be protected from UV exposure. Sunlight can fade, blister or distort healing ink. After healing always use sunscreen with SPF 50+.

Signs your tattoo is not healing properly

Watch for signs of infection. Some redness is normal, but you should contact your doctor if you see:

Excessive swelling.

Heat or pus.

Color change in the ink.

Ongoing pain after 5 days.

Strange odor or rash.

How long does it take for a tattoo to fully heal?

On average, 4 to 6 weeks. Smaller tattoos may heal faster, but deeper or color heavy tattoos may take longer.

Healing continues below the skin even when it looks fine on top. Be patient.

After its healed, what now?

Protect your ink like you protect your identity. Moisturize regularly, avoid prolonged sun exposure and don’t scratch it even after healing. Touch ups can be done later if needed, but propper care makes it less likely.

Summary

Keep it clean. Keep it dry. Keep it protected. That’s the holy trinity of tattoo healing.
